pantera the great southern trendkill lp
i'm just gonna warn you from thestart. if you're a pantera fanboy/fangirl do not read this. ah....pantera. the glam band who wanted to do something moe than play ride my rocket and latest lover. shame, really. this album starts off with a scream by seth putnam (of anal cunt fame) and this turns out to be one of the few plesent moments of a record that is nothing but groove metal and tough guy wanking. i used to love pantera. back in middle school i thought they were the shit. when i was introduced to thrash death and black metal (not to mention heavy metal) they just fell out of favor. i like the early albums (the ones that don't officially exist haha) but after that it's all downhill. i will give them one thing. they braught a lot of new people into metal including the coadmen of this blog who will probably have some nasty responce to this review. back to the music. i used to love dimebag's riffs and solos. listening to them now it's just a big yon. rex's bass is okay i guess. vinny is a pretty good drummer. he knows what he's doing i guess. which brings me to phil. his voice sounds like a cross between the dude from hatebreed and some sludge metal band. this is the album that really put his voice on the tough guy hc map. other albums had it too but this one tips the scale. i don't like the whole tough guy world. i never did. maybe that's why i don't like his voice. the music is fun to listen too sometimes if i'm bored but that's about it. i'm not one of these all groove metal sucks kind of people. i love chaos a.d. and roots, and all the other cavalera records. i like later slayer (god hates us all and the like) so i do not hate all groove metal. i even like lamb of god. i just don't much care for pantera. this isn't meant to piss anyone off. this is just my honest opinion of an album. oh and floods sucks and goes nowhere. this band is simply not for me. i used to like it when i was 11-14 but i grew out of it. maybe someday i'll rediscover it. ps bishop, feel free to curse me out in the comments section

It's all your opinion I can let it slide, however I don't really think Phil's doing much of a tough guy act on this album - specially in comparison to Far Beyond\Reinventing. The album just feels like Phil condemning whatever world he was in at the time, although mostly going to town on drug abuse (which, after nearly dying on the Far Beyond tour I can't really blame the bloke). He doesn't really talk about actually beating anyone, which is what's always seperated this from generic "I'M GON' FUCK YOU UP" shit tough guy hardcore. Give the man credit for some pretty good lyrics on this one.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm not really bothered about Pantera once being a glam band. To be honest, I wish more glam bands would do the same, glam sucks!
I hold a soft spot of Floods, but yeah it's a bit tired now.
you suck! i wanted you to be all pissed and stuff. i agree but his voice and his whole manner just smacks of the tough guy i'm gonna beat you up if you look at me. i actually love the glam pantera. everything up to power metal i like. this album isn't horrible and if i want to have some fun i do listen to this album. but it's just not my number one oh my god i listen to it every day! album. the lyrics on the next album were horible though
ReplyDeletealso, a thrash album by poison would be cool....maybe
